Woolplay is excited to introduce:

Building Blocks

A class based on the new book by Michelle Hunter (KnitPurlHunter.com)

The emphasis of this class is education. Students are guided through the various stitches and techniques each month as their knitting knowledge is increased. With a different skill focus each month there is something new to learn at each class. Topics such as gauge, cast ons, bind offs, cables, increases, decreases, lace, pattern reading and more are covered.

Work through the major knitting skills while creating 12 lovely squares.

Master each technique before moving to a more advanced concept in a carefully designed sequence.

All techniques are supported with FREE online video instruction for help outside of the class

Gain an abundance of knitting know-how along with 12 blocks to assemble into a sampler afghan.

This is a year long commitment, but classes are just once a month for one hour.

We do prefer that you choose one session and stick with that, but as long as there is room, we will try to accommodate occasional changes.

After over 7 years in business I am so excited to announce that Woolplay has a new owner! Many of you already know Danique Martin. She has been an invaluable help in every aspect of the shop and brings a new and fresh perspective to Woolplay. Knitting Inspiration...
As with any art or craft, there are a multitude of places you can look for ideas. Here are some of the obvious as well as some you may not have tried yet.

Magazines
Current knitting magazines will have the latest trendy projects as well as techniques and reviews of new yarn and books.

For something different try flipping through other mags like fashion, home & garden or interior decorating. You won't find patterns but you may see knitted items or color combinations that you can apply to future projects.

She really must practice out of the box inspiration!

Books
There are dozens of new needle art books released each month. Many of them are very specific to a certain technique or category such as vintage knits or children's patterns. There was even a book published recently on how to knit the Royal Wedding.

For something different flip through an old book to see if there's anything you forget about. Perhaps you even picked up a skein of yarn that you aren't sure what to do with, you just might find inspiration in one of those books with cobwebs on them!

Other Knitters
Hopefully, you are lucky enough to know at least one other person in your life who knits. If you don't, try signing up for a knitting class. If you're adventurous, take a project you're working on to the library or a coffee shop and chances are you'll wind up striking up a conversation with another knitter in no time.

Knitting friends can be the biggest source of inspiration available to you, and they best part is they've probably worked out the kinks and can give you guidance!

Welted Fingerless Gloves

If you head to the mall, you'll see the swimsuits are on the sale racks and backpacks and sweaters are newly stocked. That's right, autumn is just around the corner. It's the perfect time to get started on some new projects!

We just received the new Fall Interweave Knits Magazine. As always the pages are full of great articles and beautiful patterns in all of the season's hot color combinations.

Check out the Dahlia Cardigan, a stunning casual cardi with a surprise lace floral panel.

Blocking (Part 2)

Okay, now that you know how to wash your piece, the next step is the actual blocking.

Once you have gotten as much excess moisture as you can out of your handknit item, you need to lay the item out and pin to desired shape/dimensions (usually t-pins work best for this).

When blocking lace and some larger projects, you'll find that blocking wires will be helpful.
There are special blocking materials that you can purchase online, but if you have a yoga mat lying around then you already have the perfect blocking mat!

If your project should not be wet blocked then you can use steam blocking.
For steam blocking you'll skip the water and go straight to the pinning, then you can use your steam iron to lightly block. Do not press the iron against the knitted fabric, just allow it to hover over the piece and relax stitches with the steam.

Allow your project to dry completely, unpin and voila, you have a beautifully finished project!

Here is an example of the before and after of lace blocking.

These are the two most basic methods of blocking. Let us know any tips or tricks that have worked for you!

Blocking (Part 1)

To block or not to block...

Most of the time, your pattern will give you some basic instructions on blocking, even if it is just to say "block to finished measurements".
More often than not, it won't hurt to block your work. And most of the time it will greatly improve the look of your project.
I am going to show you my preferred blocking method but to read a bit more about blocking I highly recommend the book "Knitting Rules" by Stephanie Pearl-McPhee.

Use luke warm water and a bowl sized to comfortably fit your project.
Add about a tblsp. of either Woolite, shampoo or a fancy knitting wash such as Soak (which we carry at the shop!)
Submerge your work and let soak for about 5 minutes or however long your wash suggests
Rinse with room temperature water (unless using Soak which does not require rinsing). Do not ring or twist, just squeeze gently.
Lay out project on a towel and roll up, then stand on the towel to squeeze out excess moisture.

Striped Featherweight Cardi

Most of you are probably familiar with Hannah Fettig's Featherweight Cardi...but this striped version is ultra cool. (You see how inspired you can get if you spend hours a day on ravelry?) This version Nadine whipped up for the store is made from a Madeline Tosh yarn, but you could also do it out of Malabrigo Laceweight.

And you're just in luck too...we have all new colors of Malabrigo Lace just waiting to be mixed and matched for a vibrant spring cardi.

And also - as a public service note...in case you haven't heard, there is a pretty big correction on the original pattern. Check where you purchased your pattern and look for the newly updated version of the Featherweight Cardi pattern.

Plain and Simple

Nadine has done it again! She calls this one "Plain and Simple" and it comes in two fantastic forms. In the picture above you can see the more full shawl version...

and here we have the scarf version. Each is made up of several colors of Silky Wool. We have pre-selected colorways...or challenge your inner artist and pick your own colors!

There is no shortage of colors...and therefore countless colorways!!

Pull Scarf

So look at this new project Nadine whipped up! It's called the Pull Scarf and it's a store pattern (which means it's free with yarn purchase - whoopie!) Stripes are so super hot right now and this project is just the epitome of easy style. The original in the picture is made from Sublime's Soya Cotton, but any other DK weight yarn will do. I have started my own out of Sublime's Organic Cotton and Rowan Purelife Cotton in light blue and ivory. I'm loving it already!

The pattern is very easy...I would classify this as a beginner's project, so don't shy away. The fringe gives this scarf it's ultimate kick and it's highly wearable with most wardrobes. Come pick your colors for your new scarf. I can't wait to see all the color combinations all of you pick. I would wager I'm inspired to make another one after seeing new colors put together.

Finished Nimbus

Often times I am as invested as much in my student's creations as they are...and super student Joyce's Nimbus Cardigan is a great example of that. Joyce picked two lovely colors of Malabrigo worsted to create this cool two color design. The pattern took a little getting through, but Joyce's finished project is just fantastic. The pattern is from the Weekend 2009 Interweave Knits issue.

Don't tell Joyce, but I was waiting to see her completed project before I decided whether to make this one myself. She sold me. Nimbus here I come!

New Sublime books

Lots of new Sublime books to look at...

What's so great about Sublime patterns is their classic designs with just enough edge to make them memorable.

I love this lacy little wrap.

Sublime really has a nice offering of shruggy/cardigan pieces. I love making those and they are staples in my wardrobe.

Designs like these are so practical...and so chic!

This twist-y front business is showing up all over the place too. This is a good interpretation of that trend.

I think this jacket is fantastic looking...and made out of comfy cozy woolly merino.

Can't you imagine wearing this on a cold day and feeling wrapped in warmth?

You can get a look at this garment in person at the store. Ours is made in burgundy. So many patterns to choose from. I dare you to pick just one to make:)

Last Minute "Purled" Beret

Now this one's an oldie but a goodie...and for good reason. It's Wendy Bernard's Last Minute "Purled" Beret and boy oh boy do I love this pattern.

I have two of these myself and wear them all the time. Ours is made from one skein of Noro Kochoran. Kochoran is terrific in it's delicious snuggly-ness with just enough angora mixed in to give it some fluff. The stripes come from the yarn...so how easy is that? Easy to make and so fun to wear.

Totally complete student design

You simply have to take a look at our student Nancy's absolutely finished creation. Nancy worked so hard on every detail of this jacket right down to the finishing touches. Frogs make perfect closures on this coat...and check out the beautiful ribbon Nancy sewed inside to fortify the egde. An absolutely glorious project! It is the biggest example of what you can do when you're willing to work and learn what you haven't learned yet:) Great, great job Nancy!!!! Yah!!!!

Pogona

Stephen West has so super cute designs for shawls and such and Nadine found another one. This is the Pogona shawl by Mr. West. It can be bought on ravelry.

Nadine used the very popular Madeline Tosh Merino Light yarn in a striking shade of blue-ish purple. It only took one skein and kept her interested the whole time. A perfect, inexpensive project for those looking for a portable project with a little more zing!

Possum yarn

Just when you think you've seen it all! I've seen yarn made of many things I thought you could never make yarn out of, but when I first say this on the shelf at the store I was fascinated. Rimu is the name of this yarn from New Zealand. It's 60% New Zealand Merino and 40% New Zealand Possum fiber. Pretty cool!

Nadine made quick work of this simple ribbed scarf using Rimu. You have to feel it to really appreciate it. It's luscious and warm like you wouldn't believe. Come into the store so you can feast your eyes and your hands on this new unique yarn.

Rowan 49

Yah!!!! New Rowan Magazine!!! This is a really good issue too...let's take a little looksie.

Kid Silk Haze seems to be all over the place these days and I simply adore this delicate lace top using the old Rowan standby. I'm thinking hot pink for myself.

Here's another great Kid Silk Haze project. Uniquely constructed, it's essential a vest. I love the detail on the back piece.

This long wrap seems to be popular among many people who have looked in this issue. It blends two yarns together in a super simple way.

The new Rowan is loaded with great patterns...and come quick if you want your own copy. These tend to sell pretty quickly.

Spring 2011 Interweave Knits

The new Interweave Knits is here and we're about to go on a guided tour of my favorite pinky/red projects from the issue.

This one is by far my favorite. This delicate stole is made of Malabrigo Lace. Sooooooo pretty!

The curvy ruffle on this bolero-y cardigan is a unique detail.

I love the drape of this criss-crossed cover. So light and airy. If you like my picks, come check out the other offerings the mag has to offer.

Vogue Knitting Spring/Summer 2011

Lots of fresh spring looks grace the pages of the latest Vogue Knitting.

If there's anything that catches my eye, it's a cute little baby doll top. This pattern by Louisa Harding is very pretty and very wearable.

I like this little number made out of Rowan's Calmer. I'm already picking which combination of colors to use.

There seems to be a resurgance of lacy knits. This bulkier lace top is a great enrty into lace knitting. Perfect for a summer cover up.

The simplicity of this sweater mixed with the deep v makes this sweater easy to make...and hard to forget. Now if you're in the market for a knit bikini, the issue has a couple of those too. But I'll let you gape in amazement at those yourself:)

Sublime student knits

Now here's the story with one of our students Lynne: when she first came to the store she didn't knit at all. But after picking up the basics like she'd been doing it all her life and being in our ongoing project class...well, look what she works on now. Here's the detail of a spring top Lynne made.

Cool Tinted Tweed Yarn

Sometimes we get the super coolest yarns in the store and they get lost in the shuffle of all the new yarns we get. Well I am determined that this yarn be recognized for its true coolness! It's called Tinted Tweed. It's 100% Superfine Alpaca and comes in skeins of a whopping 660 yds each! The suggested gauge is 5 sts to an inch on 5's, but I see this as one of those yarns that could be used in a variety of ways. All you imaginative knitters come take a look and see what you can do with this great yarn!

New books and project

Entrelac, entrelac, entrelac...as far as the eye can see! This is the coolest entrelac book I've ever put eyes on. You'll have to come in and look at it...you'll be amazed at how many imaginative ways entrelac can be used. Really great book.

The Fine Line booklet is a lovely collection of drapey shawls and the like. Really delicate and beautiful.

Nadine's practically already finished her version of this beautiful scarf/wrap...but hers is in a beautiful selection of blues and greys. Both are gorgeous!

Sublime Chunky Merino Yarn and Book

Love this chalet sweater. Simple and classic design. Can't you feel the wind rushing by your face as you race down the slopes...or maybe instead sip a hot cocoa by the fire while knitting:)

I think this one is a cool fun design. Pretty hip if you ask me.

I'm a sucker for interesting cable work and this one had me at "hello."

This entrelac blazer is such a gorgeously sophisticated piece. It seems like everywhere I look now I see more and more inspired uses for entrelac.

Great Woolly Merino Projects

So it's that time of year...the time when you want on something warm and cozy, soft and snuggly. So here are two great options for some good winter knitting. One's super quick and easy and the other will keep you occupied a bit longer. First up are the "World's Easiest Fingerless Gloves." And that pattern is no joke. Very easy...and only one skein of Sublime Woolly Merino! How great! We've had so many people make these and each is so pleased with the results.

Vogue Knitting Holiday 2010

Holiday time is upon us...and that means new Vogue Knitting!!!!

Lots of good offering this time around as well. I love this little jacket...and this color red is beautiful.

Some interesting shaping gives this demure top it's cool details.

If you've got a fancy pants holiday party or event, you'd better get knitting quick on this little cardi with the perfect bow. This yarn has a little metallic bling bling to it which is so "in" right now.

One of the other great colors this season is this beautiful blush pink. And doesn't this scarf just look so delicate and feminine?

Entrelac Jacket

So we have another completed custom entrelac jacket...and it looks FANTASTIC!!! Ruby made her jacket from Noro Silk Garden Lite...and I love how much she loves bright beautiful colors. You can see by the twinkle in her eye how proud Ruby is with her wonderful jacket...but it doesn't hold a candle to how proud I am of her project! I love watching our students just grow and grow in their abilities!!

Mini hats and mittens

They are little mini hats and mittens to be used as ornaments...or whatever adorable thing you can think up. Each one uses a little bit of yarn and a couple of Small Balls will yield a few hats or mittens.

New Books

So Debbie Bliss has a new yarn called Glen...and a brand new book to go with it.

The yarn has a subtle tone on tone variation to it. I think this jacket is so chic looking.

As you can see, the shading is subtle and gorgeous.

Jenny Watson has given us another great Noro book called Noro Style.

The knits are cute and quirky as we've all come to expect from Noro.

The book utilizes the whole family of Noro yarns...so you'd be hard pressed to find something you don't want to make!

Student Knits Interlude 2

This is quite a cool student project and I'm eager to show of Nancy's great knitting skill. She and I designed this entrelac jacket for her...and it's turning out SO GREAT! A little more fiddling with collar and closures and Nancy will be turning heads this fall.

The jacket is made of Noro Kochoran which has great colorways and feels snuggly good. I'm so proud of Nancy and her very own custom knit!!!

Student Knits Interlude 1

So we've had so many great things made by our students that I thought I'd take some time to show them off! Here is the beautiful Pam modeling her Sonoma Wrap. Isn't is absolutely gorgeous???? This is one of those projects we sold a lot of...but never saw a finished project.

The wrap is a linen stitch which I love love love. I know I'm a little biased towards the students (only cuz they are the best ever!)...but the pieces they produce are wonderful and show how accomplished them become as knitters. Yah Pam!!

Fall Interweave Knits and Vogue Knitting

So here we go...new magazines!!!

First up is the Fall Interweave. This little cropped cardigan is my favorite. Cool construction, cool shape.

Color work is making a huge comeback. So if you're looking for something to stir up your Norwegian roots, look no further.

I love a good accessory. You know, one that's small enough to finish pretty quickly, but has enough interest not to be mind-numbingly boring. Voila!

For those who are looking for a little more edge to your knits Vogue Knitting has it all.

I like the London Calling section of the mag. This cardigan is a relatively classic shape, but zazzed up to be more modern.

Pretty classic cables always do it for me.

This issue of VK has knits from the last winner of Project Runway. A little "out there," but very interesting.

Where's it come from? Free online pattern

What do I need to know? Knit, simple short row shaping

Do we need to twist your arm? If you're looking for a relatively simple project with a bit of a twist...try this baby out. Cash Iroha is (in my humble opinion) one of the most overlooked yarns in the store. This bolero pattern is a great opportunity to make this yarn shine. It's knit from side to side...and the short row shaping is of the super simple variety...as in, knit to a certain point and then turn your work and go in the other direction...no stinky "wraps!"

Sublime shrug and Summer Hours

Those design folks at Sublime really have it going on. Here's a great (and deceptively easy) shrug from book 632. It's made from Soya Cotton which drapes so well! This is actually a rectangle with simple lace edging. Cool, right?

There's been a mini-resurgence of lace weight mohair patterns and here's another great one.

I love this sock pattern...and it's not just because it has the coolest name...Wasabi Peas Socks.

I don't know if I could pull this one off myself, but I think this bulky garter jacket is my favorite design in this issue.

I thought this pattern was kind of cool. It's called the Jellyfish bag.

This V-neck lace cardigan is right up my alley. And I love that coral-y/orange-y color. Come check out the new IK and get your spring knitting in order!

Debbie really does come up with some cute patterns. This one caught my eye immediately...love the stripes and colors.

This is the kind of pattern I love too...but can rarely ever wear well. I envy those who can...curse you curvy body of mine!

My latest love is cool funnel/cowl collars, so this one had me at hello.

The issue has a very Hamptons-relax-at-the-beach kind of feel, so this casual V-neck is a perfect representation of that. Good issue with great kid stuff too. Come get your copy...these sell out quickly.

Now I know this sweater is super straightforward, but it's my absolute favorite in the mag. Love the color, the neckline, and the details in the buttons.

I love this kind of hippie-esque tunic. Feminine and funky.

Chain Lace Scarf

I know I put this book up on the blog before but I don't know if I ever showed you all the lovely project that Nadine made out of it.

Being the Koigu wizard she is, Nadine chose to make the Big Fat Scarf made from 9 different colors of KPPPM. This is a crochet scarf (sorry knitters), but this is so beautiful that it might convince you to give crochet a whirl!

Do we need to twist your arm? I have loved this yarn since it came in and leave it to Nadine to find the perfect pattern for it! This vest pattern looks tricky, but it’s actually one of the smartest and simplest patterns around. It’s basically a ribbed rectangle that when sewn together creates the vest. So cool and easy!

I have to say...I am loving all these cool new Noro books. Finally, great patterns that accentuate a truly unique line of yarns. Catwalk Two might be the best yet. It features so many great patterns...hip and cool and so versatile.

This cool cardigan is uniquely constructed and made from Kureyon Sock yarn. Just one of the many cool garments inside.

And we have a new entry from Debbie Bliss. It's the Eco Fairtrade Collection and the patterns are very "down to earth" and casual.

My favorite, of course, is this sweater with the leaf motif. I never met a leaf motif I didn't like:)

Yummy, yummy yarn! We love the new Sublime Aran cashmere merino silk that we started carrying...but wished that there were more colors. And now our wishes have come true. We've gotten so many more great color options in the aran weight!

We also have restocked and gotten more colors of the ever popular cashmere merino silk in the dk weight. We love love love this yarn and our customers do too. It's quickly become our "go to" dk.

Rowan Studio 17

After a little bit of a hiatus, Rowan Studio is back around. They're calling this issue "Sparkle" and it's a good description. Everything is a little sparkly or sheer and drapey. This little bolero is actually called the Sparkle Bolero.

This wrap is embellished with a fat satin ribbon and made from Kid Silk Aura. Lots of fun young designs in this issue.

New Patterns

We've got a whole new batch of great single patterns and since I love them so much, I thought you would all too. We've got two real cool patterns from Coco Knits. The first is Sabine (shown above.) My new thing is stretchy gauzy things...so I fell for this like a ton of bricks!

Gisela is another pattern from Coco Knits that has the same feel. Classic...yet modern and a little edgy.
We have some new patterns from Heirloom Stitches which features great kids patterns. This one is called Jack and Jill and is made from Noro Iro...which has so many wonderful bright colorways.

If you want something a little more traditional perhaps this blanket pattern, called Beep Beep will tickle your fancy. It's a great pattern with a fresh twist.

Up next are some Imagine Knit patterns which I love. This one's called London calling and I think it's super chic.

The Lucia sweater pictured above is actually on my needles waiting to be finished. This one was such a fun knit...and a great design.

And finally we have Lulu. It's a cute little pattern for a very crafty looking cropped cardigan. Hopefully one of these great patterns will inspire you to finish up your holiday knitting...and start something for yourself!

Lobster Pot Sock

Oh man oh man oh man. I love Lobster Pot yarns. Something about the vibrancy of the colors really does it for me. And so you can only imagine how I squealed with joy and saw that Lobster Pot has made a triumphant return to Woolplay.

Still cuddled in its cozy bag is Lobster Pot sock yarn...in all their beautiful colorways. This is a great new yarn for us because it now gives sock knitters a solid (semi-solid) color option for socks that is out of this world. I'm not the biggest sock knitter myself, but I love to do lacy scarves and shawls from sock yarn. And I've got my eye on the pink...

Malabrigo Twist is in the House

Oh how I love you Malabrigo! Check out our new yarn from Malabrigo. It's called Twist and it's 100 Pure Baby Merino Wool. Which means its soft in a way I can't even begin to describe. And it still comes it the lovely semi-solid colorways.

Each skein is 150 yards. The gauge is 4-5 sts per inch on US 9-11. There really is no good excuse for you not to try this yarn. One skein will easily yield a quick knit hat for a holiday present. But a full garment of this would be simply delicious!

Now let me tell you a little about this great yarn. It's made by Noro, so that should tell a little something about the colorways - they are vibrant and gorgeous. Cash Iroha is a wonderful blend of 40% Silk, 30% Lamb's Wool, 20% Cashmere, with 10% Nylon thrown in just for fun. I'll tell you though...it feels mostly silky to me. Each skein has 91 meters and it's traditionally used as a light or regular worsted weight. Needle size is US 7 or 8. The regular price is $11.00...but with 15% off, it's only $9.35 a skein. A great deal on a great yarn.

We have some of the girls in our Project Class making garments with this yarn and they are simply stunning. Hats are great holiday gifts...simple and quick, quick, quick. I love this chullo pattern.

Wispy and airy cardigans are making a HUGE comeback and this Ripple Cardigan is a great one. It's made from KidSilk Haze and would feel like wearing a feathery cloud I imagine.

If there's one thing I can't get enough of it's a good tweed sweater. Maybe the man in your life will like one of these cozy sweaters for time in front of the fireplace! The issue features so many more great patterns...socks, hats, mittens, and more!

Zauberball!!!!

Some yarns coming into the store have a buzz around them even before they get here...and Zauberball is one of them. But wait no longer, loyal customers because it's here! This funky sock yarn even makes me want to whip up a quick pair of socks...and I'm not even really a sock knitter. Great colors and a great texture make this yarn super irresistible. For those of you who come in to get your very own, let me pass on a tip from the manufacturer: When knitting with Zauberball, pull from the outside of the ball. Pulling from the inside will cause the yarn to stretch and tangle. If you want a center pull skein, rewind it yourself on a ball winder.

Now onto other exciting news...our first Knit Night was a huge success! We had a nice group of knitters Tuesday night sharing their projects while making new friends. I love that! Come out and join us for Knit Night - Tuesday from 7-8:30.
